Head protection is a vital component of the personal protective equipment (PPE) that keeps employees safe. Whether it’s traditional hard hats or safety helmets, the right head protection can save lives in an instant. It’s important to choose the correct head protection for each job based on a thorough assessment of workplace hazards and the specific risks.
Some occupations require the use of head protection such as construction workers, carpenters, electricians, machinists, millwrights and others. They may be at risk of falling objects, striking their heads on fixed structures or contact with electrical hazards. To reduce the potential for these incidents, head protection must resist penetration, absorb shock and provide arc flash resistance.
ANSI Standard Z89.1 specifies three levels of protective headgear for workers: Class G provides resistance to impact and penetration, and Class E offers protection against both impacts and arc flash. In addition, some hats and hard hats are designed to accept attachments that provide additional protection. These include face shields and hearing protectors, but it’s important to understand that adding these components can affect the original degree of head protection offered by the hat or hard hat.
Head Protection 101: Preventing Injuries with the Right Gear
When choosing head protection, look for labels and certification marks inside the helmet or hard hat that indicate it meets ANSI Z89.1 or a consensus standard, such as EN12492, that is equivalent. Also, check for dents, cracks and signs of rough treatment or unauthorised alterations that could lower the degree of head protection. Finally, inspect the suspension system regularly, ensuring it is fastened securely and that the internal cradle fits your head properly.
